Hannah Meyer Trinity Lutheran College (Ashmore Road Campus) Interconnected Digital photograph 97 x 107 x 3.5 cm I explored aspects of identity and what means we use to identify a particular person among others. It occurred to me that this is only possible when we look at people in relation to each other, rather than concentrating on one person, and that how we generally see individual people is side by side with others. It is in this situation that we see the difference and sameness of everyone all at the same time. I have communicated this simultaneous nature of identity by constructing a fingerprint and photographing it to appear as many separate but connected individuals. This artwork is about what it means to be a ‘living thing’ existing — or perceiving to exist — in time. People age, things grow, but what actually is time? Is it something that we live through, does it measure our every second, or is it just something we create to comprehend change, growth and life? We see a past, a present and a future. Perhaps there is no such thing as time, just the ‘continued process of existence’ — our lives always travelling. Grace Nucifora Freshwater Christian College (Cairns) Perfect Me Mixed media 170 x 45 x 150 cm I develop pieces to stand out, not to blend in. Society pressures women into wearing off-the-rack, branded clothing. My opinion of perfection, style and class contradicts that of society. The gold embroidery staged within this piece represents my desire to view myself in this ‘perfection’ every day. Gold is everlasting, proven to withstand time and fashion, so it is my wish to view myself in this way — to be unique, strong and steadfast, not dictated to by fashion expectations. The gold embedded is significant of my Italian heritage and the way I desire to express myself boldly and authentically.
