Paean Sarkar The SCOTS PGC College (Warwick) Defining Space – Movement Performance art. Single channel digital video: 2:38 minutes, sound, colour My work Defining Space – Movement is a simplified representation of an abstract concept of space. Movement of my body and free-flowing rope activates the boundless three- dimensional extent that is space. The relative position and direction of my body and matter attempt to define the intangible. This artwork is very much influenced by Justine William’s style of performance. I have stripped the piece of any emotional or metaphorical meaning through grey-scale and lifeless background noise. Scarlett Sillence Queensland Academy for Creative Industries (Kelvin Grove) Oh, The Dust Returns To The Earth As It Was Thread in fabric 62 x 47 cm Life and death are enigmatic, superior and often perplexing concepts; however, this installation upends these preconceived notions by recognising the monotony of life and the naturalness of death. By using my own mother as the subject, I address the universal unifier; a mother, or someone to lose, therefore evoking strong personal feelings from the audience. Through materiality and repetitious stitching I was able to represent the eternal nature of death, which additionally recognises the untangled and frayed edges of life to evoke feelings of fragility. The unpredictable nature of the stitches reflects the chaos and disorder of life and death. Natalie Smith Goondiwindi State High School Sick Love Mixed media sculpture, performance, photography and Photoshop 110 x 80 x 15 cm Sick Love is an oxymoron for ‘lovesick’, representing relationship decay. Materials such as a wedding dress, bouquet of flowers and rust medium contextualise decaying love through degrading, tearing apart and staining processes. Entrapment is symbolised using superimposed Photoshop figures and an appropriated muslin mask form Magritte’s Lovers, referencing suffocation. The hybridised forms unsettle the viewer as they express dual emotions and consequences when love in a relationship decays and consequently upends one’s feelings. This performance work is ironically performed as a wedding shoot, but is photographed as an obituary to a dying relationship.
