Luca Cadioli Queensland Academy for Creative Industries (Kelvin Grove) Movens Mortem Single channel digital video: 3:40 minutes, sound, colour Movens Mortem , a modern interpretation of traditional memento mori and vanitas still life paintings, aims to reflect on the vanity of worldly possessions. In doing so it considers our mortality and, like traditional artworks of this style, intends to humble the viewer by reminding them that they will die. This is conveyed symbolically with items of material value, which act as an admonition of the futility of life and the certainty of death, being submerged in water to suggest a need to cleanse or purge one’s self of superficiality. Working for a company that sells mass-produced fashion and domestic goods, I experience and observe the crowds of customers on a regular basis, and can’t help but question the intent behind their purchases; whether they are buying these copious amounts of things because they genuinely need them or as an attempt to feel better about themselves or seek self-worth. Often, I feel like the ugly duckling of my family, due to the path I wish to follow being so unfamiliar to them. Although the unknown future that awaits me becomes daunting at times, I have been privileged with a childhood filled with so much love that I learned to be different is something wonderful. Thanks to my upbringing, my life is now filled with like-minded people who I treasure dearly. No matter how my own home videos turn out, I know I’ll have my best friend in them all.
