Lily Cokanavula Trinity Bay State High School Kahu huruhuru Single channel digital video: 1:34 minutes, sound, colour My work explores the idea of having a kahu huruhuru (traditional Maori cloak with feathers) that wraps around my whole identity. My kahu huruhuru is pristine white and much longer than the traditional version. My performance begins with an awakening and then my journey moving steadfastly through other-worldly surrounds. The materials, muslin and tracing paper, are transparent and seemingly fragile, but protect me and give me strength as I push through the richly symbolic personal and physical terrain. I end my journey by finally looking up to the horizon and longing for my culture across the sea. Jayne Conn-Taylor Somerville House (South Brisbane) A feather falls at 11:20 Carbon pencil drawing with splashes of black drawing ink 70 x 114 x 0.5 cm The many antiques collected by my family throughout the years contain unknown and forgotten memories, from moments in time or particular people — as if they have their own past life. My mother and grandmother collected feathers, and I was always told that the wine glass was from my grandparents' wedding. The second piece is a drawing of my grandfather's old clock, which stopped at 11:20 — when or why the clock mysteriously stopped at this time is unknown. The pieces essentially reflect the memories associated with these objects, fading away, or being influenced by untruths. Ana Daniels Bundaberg Christian College Beautiful Decay (Candy-coated Poison) Polyurethane foam, acrylic paint, gloss enamel and gap filler 86 x 181 x 21 cm This work was heavily inspired by the beauty that can be found in the process of natural decay and the multitude of ornate moulds and fungi found within nature. The candy coloured yellows, bright oranges and fairy floss pinks evident in different species of slime mould encapsulated the bittersweet nature of decomposition and ruin I wanted to express in my artwork. The juxtaposition of the aesthetically appealing appearance to these moulds and the deterioration of their environment is confronting. This dissonance frames the process of decay as unexpectedly beautiful.
