QAGOMA acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples refers to two distinct groups in Australia. Expressions such as 'Indigenous Australian', 'Indigenous peoples', 'Aboriginal peoples' and 'First Australian' are other non-specific plural terms used interchangeably in this document. (Please note the capitalisation of ‘Indigenous’ to distinguish Australian from international contexts.) First Nations peoples, First Peoples, indigenous peoples Used by QAGOMA to refer to indigenous peoples of all nations, adding ‘Australia’s’ or ‘Australian’ where relevant. It is important to respond to feedback from people about how they prefer to be identified. In consultation with QAGOMA’s Indigenous Advisory Panel, in this document, we define the following terms:
