When we were young, we had fun building malankarri, otherwise known as humpies. A humpy is a small structure built for shelter. We use different materials to make humpies, including driftwood, seaweed, palm fronds, and manmade items like tarps, fishing nets and corrugated iron.
Building humpies is not just for kids — adults build them to provide shelter when they are away from home gathering food. Wunmaalinda malankarri, which means ‘a humpy gives shelter from the rain’.
Now you can build your own humpy. Be as creative as you like with the materials available.
